Best Career Advice Sites on the Web

Opinions differ on the best career advice sites, but these are my personal favorites (only sites with a lot of free content are listed):

  • Occupational Outlook Handbook - The OOH is published by the U.S. Department of Labor. If you are pay taxes to the U.S. Government, here is one of the best uses of your tax dollars and more people should know about this resource and use it in their career decision-making. This is the first source I check if I want to know more about a traditional career path. It does not include unusual or cutting-edge careers, but all the predictable careers are included and there is a good amount of information given. Highly recommended!
  • Chimby.com - This is a mega site that searches 400 career advice sites to bring you TONS of information on the career topic of your choice. One challenge when using this site is that you can suffer from information overload from contradictory information, but if you want the most complete possible set of resources on a particular subject area, this is the search engine to use.
  • QuintCareers.com - This site is run by Dr. Randall Hansen and features 4,500 pages of free content on careers and jobs. As Dr. Hansen has taught at the college level for 15 years, much of the QuintCareers.com content is particularly good for college students.
  • JobHuntersBible.com - This is the official Web site for Richard (Dick) Bolles' book, What Color Is Your Parachute: A Practical Manual for Job-Hunters and Career-Changers, as well as his new book, The Job-Hunters’ Survival Guide: How to Find Hope and Rewarding Work, Even When "There Are No Jobs.” As of 2010, Mr. Bolles is now 82 but continues to be one of the most knowledgeable, prolific, and encouraging voices in career development today.
  • The Riley Guide - The Riley Guide is a directory of employment and career information sources and services on the Internet. It is primarily intended to provide instruction for job seekers on how to use the Internet to their best advantage. Margaret F. Dikel (formerly Margaret F. Riley) built the site in 1994 and has continued to grow it and maintain it ever since. Ms. Dikel is a librarian specializing in online information architecture, design, and searching.
  • The Wall St. Journal Careers Section - Lots of timely content about all aspects of career planning, including career change success stories. The quality of the articles tends to be high since the WSJ employs professional journalists.
